Oil paint dries very slowly, unlike acrylic paint that dries quickly. Acrylic paint was initially created as a means for underpainting for oil paintings.
It is perfectly stable to put a base of acrylic and then oil paint on it. Linseed oil added to the paint extends oil color, increases the flow and increases viability. Oil paint with added medium is called long. Using oil paint straight from the tube is called short or rigid.
The place where you keep your oil paintings on a wooden board is called a palette. The very best palettes are made of pear wood.
It is very important to understand the colors and see which colors are:
Transparent (see through) semi opaque (slightly see through) and opaque (not transparent). When you take up paint on your brush, make sure there is enough for two to three strokes and always end your brushwork on the canvas.
Make sure you use linseed oil only when you are using the wet on wet technique.
As a beginner, you don’t want to confuse yourself with all the different mediums. Expect to experiment with those when you are more experienced. If you can really afford professional paints, surely go ahead and buy them. You will immediately be aware that they are completely different from beginner paints.
Always buy the best brushes you can afford. Da Vinci brushes are the best professional brushes. Buy the long-handled brushes and hold it near the end of the handle to paint. Take risks and play with your painting. At first, only use a painting easel and be sure to step back from your painting all the time. Never put your brushes in turpentine when working in one session. Go ahead and wipe with paper towels or cloth, wash your brushes in turpentine or a similar solvent at the end of a session and be sure to immediately clean with soapy water.
Preparing the canvas is the foundation of your piece.
It is absolutely imperative that you put in the first underpainting on the canvas. This removes the brightness of the white. The more layers of paint you get on your canvas, the more professional it will look. Your paintings will be bright and stand out with color and texture.
Traditionally, a ground color of Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna or Ocher is painted as a good first underpainting. Sometimes it can be very exciting to paint on a bright red or dark blue as your first underpainting, especially when you are in the habit of putting on three or four layers and seeing the underpainting come through your painting. Use a large wash brush for applying the first layer of underpainting. If you use acrylic, it will dry quickly.
How to apply oil paint in two methods
1. Wet on Wet or Alla Prima (in one step)
2. Stage Painting or Glazing Fat over Lean
Utilizing the Wet on Wet technique, paint is applied directly from the tube or diluted to the consistency of salad dressing with oil. The essential part of painting wet on Wet is to make your brushes and painting knives do all the work for you.
You will want to experiment with different brushes to see the marks and scratch textures they produce.
Never work with turpentine unless you are working with the method of enameling.
Never put the brushes in turpentine during your painting sessions.
Turpentine will burn the bristles and eventually there will be some left in the brush when you start using color.
This will make it difficult to maintain control of the movement or the thickness of the paint. The technique of glazing is a building up process of paint in a series of thinned layers of paint.
A lean 1st layer diluted with solvent
The 2nd lean layer diluted with less solvent
The 3rd lean layer diluted with less solvent
A fat 4th layer straight from the paint tube
The 5th layer of fat diluted with some linseed oil
The 6th fat layer diluted with more linseed oil
It is essential that this process is followed exactly or the layers of paint will dry at different times and possibly crack the paint. This is a slow method and patience is a necessity, but the results are spectacular tonal values which are essential in a painting.
