Picture Frames and Glass

frame oil painting glass

Frames have traditionally been constructed of wood, which remains the most common and most prestigious of material, although other materials are often used, including aluminum, plastic and polystyrene.

A photo frame can be any color and texture, but gilding is common, especially in older pictures.  Many artists develop moldings, which may relate to the subject presented.  Complicated, older works are sometimes built in a gilded plaster and light wood.

The picture frame may contain a pane of glass or plastic glass substitute such as Plexiglas, to save the image.  In several cases where the art in the frame is disposable or durable, protection may not be necessary.

Universal glass is on the top of most watercolor paintings, and rarely on oil paintings.  Glass may be processed by the layer, the most common being UV filters.

Some glass is coated with museum glass.  Museum glass is the highest quality picture framing glass in the industry.  It has the highest light transmission and the lowest light reflection and is almost undetectable in ideal lighting conditions.

For the pieces to be framed under glass, except for most of the cheap posters or temporary exhibitions, the glass should be lifted off the paper surface.  This is complemented by mats, a coating of plastic spacers, Shadowboxing, stacking two frames of glass in the middle, or other methods.

If the paper or other material was put in contact with the glass directly, any condensation in the glass art could absorb quickly, leaving no room to evaporate.  This is detrimental to almost any means.  This causes the paint to adhere to the glass, mold or deteriorate.

Increasing the glass is often necessary when a piece is finished in a medium such as charcoal or pastel, to prevent stains.  Caution should be taken with these works, however, using acrylic, can accumulate a static charge that can attract particles to the pigment paper.  The actual use of glass can help to stop it.

Some types of works not usually needing glass when framed, include paintings in acrylic finishes or oil paint.

These types of pieces are still sometimes a subject for glass, but not if kept within a carefully controlled climate environment.

The framework and its supports must be completed before starting your work of art.  Artwork not framed correctly cannot be shown to its full potential.
