Oil paint is an interesting medium to work with. One is never bored while painting with oil paints. There are a variety of materials and mediums available. When you combine these materials and media with the versatility of oil paints, there are a variety of interesting ways to start an oil painting and make your painting experience more interesting and enjoyable.
COAL
Charcoal works great as a preliminary step to oil paint. There are three main forms of charcoal used more often by artists. Vine and willow charcoal tend to be more highly favored for preliminary drawings because they leave a lighter mark and are more easily erased. Compressed charcoal leaves a much darker line and is more difficult to remove. It is not as widely used to start an oil painting. Some helpful tools to use for working with charcoal include kneaded erasers, bristle brushes, blenders and tortillions. Whatever type of charcoal you use to create drawings, make sure not to go overboard with your application. Charcoal is very forgiving with oil paints, but too much may affect the painting adversely.
PAINTING ON A TONED GROUND
Depending on the final image that you are working towards, sometimes the white of the canvas material may be too bright or have too much contrast making a painting quite difficult to work with. Using a uniform toned ground on your support will make it easier to judge the values in your painting. You can use any color you like for the tone of your canvas. Some of the most popular tones are warm reds, yellows and brown.
Toning your canvas is quite simple and does not require much time. Here’s an example with one of my favorite colors. First create a thin wash using a combination of Yellow Ochre and Burnt Umber. Apply a generous amount of wash to your support. Use a large bristle brush to spread and completely cover the support. Allow the wash to dry for a couple of minutes and then wipe off excess with a cloth. You do not have to use oils to tone your canvas. You can tone your canvas with any of the water mediums that are described below.
ACRYLIC PAINTING
Acrylic paint is an excellent choice for starting an oil painting and one of my favorites. One of the most attractive features of acrylic paint is the fast drying time. Ideas can be worked quickly on canvas instead of waiting days for the underpainting to dry. You are ready to paint within minutes. This really does depend on the type of acrylic paint you are using and how thick you apply it. Water-based media is not only attractive for fast drying time, but as in other waters, there is no need to thin the paint with hazardous substances such as turpentine.
Water-soluble pencils
Water-soluble pencils provide an excellent way to start an oil painting, mainly because of their versatility. The beauty of this medium is that when dry, acts like a normal colored pencil, but when water is added, it magically mimics the properties of water color. This allows the artist to draw lines so detailed and create colorful washes.
WATER SOLUBLE OIL PAINTING
Many artists are not familiar with water-soluble oil paint. With normal oil paints, a traditional method of starting a painting is by diluting oil paint with turpentine to apply washes. The problem with turpentine is its a very hazardous substance. Many artists have allergic reactions to this substance and can not use it. The beauty of water soluble oil paints is that it does not require turpentine. They can be diluted with plain old water. Oil paintings soluble in water behave like normal oil paints, and brushes can be cleaned with soap and water, again avoiding the need for harsh chemicals.
