An oil painting support is any type of surface that is paintable. The choice of the support is very important because it determines in part how the painting will be perceived by the viewer.
Your support must meet minimum conditions. It must accept paint well without absorbing too much of the pigments.
The least expensive support is oil painting paper. It is very useful for practice. You can buy cotton canvas. These canvases usually contain 10 sheets of medium-tooth 5-oz cotton fabric that has been triple primed with acrylic plaster. The tooth paper or canvas is the degree of roughness or smoothness of the fabric. The more tooth it has, the more it can hold a pigment.
Next in line are the popular councils or panels of fabric that are sheets of cardboard covered with a low-cost white painted cloth. These canvas pads are very popular because they are inexpensive (especially when purchased in bulk), easy to store and easy to carry outdoors. However, they are not permanent, they deteriorate over time.
Good results can also be obtained from a genuine Masonite or 3-ply chipboard made from three layers of stucco on the front and a coat of paint on the back to prevent warping.
The ultimate foundation of the oil painting is fabric stretched over a wooden frame. It has wonderful elasticity and resistance, and history has shown that retention is very good. The canvas is of course more expensive, but when you are ready, this will be your field of choice and never want to go back to something else.
There are a lot of brands, sizes, weights and qualities to choose from. Only experience will teach you what type of fabric is best suited to your style and content.
Canvas fabric is cotton or linen. The best and most expensive canvas is linen, which runs better and has more teeth. There are different linen canvases in the market. They come in rolled canvas or pre-stretched. They can be prepared for oil and acrylic paint or unprimed.
Cotton canvas is a great support for starter oil painters. It is a comparatively strong material and much more cost effective than linen. It has an extremely even and perfunctory weave. Cotton canvas comes in rolls or pre-stretched, primed or unprimed.
The texture of fabric can be tightly woven and smooth with a fairly coarse open weave. That means the tooth of the fabric may be thin or thick, and nothing in the medium.
If you paint a lot, even commercially pre-stretched fabric can be costly. If so, you can buy rolls of initiation or unprimed (raw) of canvas. Then, stretcher bars can create a support of a certain size. If you bought unprimed canvas, you still have to prime the canvas with an oil base primer.
To save money you may be tempted to work on small canvases. This is not recommended. Unless you are an artist with experience working in a small field can easily cause tight, too controlled paintings. Stick with supports of at least 16 “x 20″.
