The next time you’re looking at a blank canvas, do not despair. Sometimes our minds need a little break from painting. I’d like to share how to find inspiration, which will do wonders when you are feeling stressed. I like driving the car and taking a stroll in the countryside. I always carry a notebook or binder with me. I find so much beauty and inspiration from nature.
Visit a museum or a gallery – for the design of another is enough to stimulate your creativity. I’ll call a few local galleries and head with a friend to see the beautiful art that can be discovered there. If they let you take pictures, take some photos of the works that attract your attention and bring them back to your studio for inspiration.
Go to a bookstore - Visit your local bookstore, have a cup of coffee and browse the art section. See what new information sparks your interest. I collect everything from magazines to books on art history.
Play music - your favorite CD playing in the background, a blank canvas, some of your favorite colors and you painting spontaneously. Let the rhythm of the music lead your brush. You will be pleasantly surprised by what comes out.
Do not be afraid to try something different. Oil is incredibly versatile. Experiment with different painting techniques. The oil can be diluted to a watery consistency or brushed with thick lines. Do not limit yourself to one style. Do not worry about making mistakes or following all the rules. Have fun.
