A mixing surface is often called the palette. This same term also refers to the collection of colors a particular artist uses to create their paintings. In this article, we will talk about the current mix of surfaces.
A palette is the surface where you mix your paint. It is easy to make your own, or you can buy one. The standard palette is hardwood and is an oval, usually with a hole cut to accommodate the thumb. Oval palettes are favored by artists who like to hold them while painting.
However, other artists holding a palette get dirty with paint. So if you want to keep both hands free, virtually any flat surface will do. Turpentine and plastic do not mix, however, so be sure your palette is not plastic.
You can use a plate, cookie sheet or ceramic board. Some artists like to work on clear glass plates or opaque backing of a middle value gray paper. Porcelain and glass blades are easier to clean, but they are also fragile.
If painting only once a week or even less frequently, a disposable palette may be your best option. These sheets come in different sizes and can be used with acrylics, oils, and watercolors. When you’ve completed a session of painting, simply discard the used palette.
Many artists like using a color palette that’s neutral, either of wood, with its natural color, or any other surface painted brown or gray. Or, paint your palette white. If you are a beginner, it will be easier mixing colors on a white background and the canvas is also white. Moreover, neutral ground can make it easier to measure values.
When working on location, a palette that fits into your paint box is desirable. In the study, choose the larger size to give you more room in the mixing zone.
While painting you need palette cups called buckets. These are small cups that clip in your palette. Many varieties are available. There are styles of one cup and two styles of glass, with and without cover. All are designed to fit securely on the edge of the palette.
Avoid buckets that are very small due to the large brush not fitting in them. Make sure the size you choose will to fit into the picture box. If you keep your palette, you will want buckets covered. Covers are excellent if you want to keep your paint medium fresh from one painting session to the next.
Dippers quickly become sticky and dirty, and are difficult to clean. Try using small cans. Wash them well before use and then throw them away when they are too dirty and sticky.
When painting, you’ll often want to clean the brush with paint thinner or mineral spirits. If you use water soluble paints you need, of course, to use water. You can buy special bottles available at any art store or on the Internet. However, you can easily make your own.
Take a small can, clean it, and then punch holes in its bottom with a hammer and nails. Place the can in a wide bottle with the bottom upwards. Then fill the bottle with the cleaning solvent. When you put a dirty brush in the paint solvent, the paint will fall through the holes in the can and will remain at the bottom of the bottle, keeping the solvent relatively clean.
This information should be more than enough to give a good start with paddles, bowls, and jars.
