Guitar lessons and Rock Band Classes: Playing as a Band by Shawn Manaher
Guitar lessons exist in the first place because of the sad truth that not everyone has an amazing, natural talent for music. Lessons are important for those beginning to learn how to play the electric guitar. An inspiring guitar teacher can give his or her students the skills necessary to play the instrument proficiently, perhaps even well enough to play some popular songs. Even so, these lessons often leave students wanting more. Young people wanting to learn to play the guitar or the electric bass usually dream of taking the stage to play with a band, not sitting alone in the basement practicing scales. These are just the sort of students who will benefit from rock band classes.
Titles like Rock Band and Guitar Hero have been among the best-selling video games of the last decade. Playing them has become almost a universal experience in our culture, and one result of that has been that a whole new generation of youngsters has tasted the romance and excitement of playing rock music in a band. They have learned first-hand how energizing and exciting it is to play life music with their friends. Kids who might not feel like they fit in anywhere else can find purpose and a creative outlet through joining a band.
Performing is also one a powerful tool of learning the musician’s trade. There are few substitutes for gaining the courage needed to play the part with the skill and moxie of a true professionanl. Everyone must play their part and and play it well, so that the whole band sounds as good as possible. This inncludes all of the musicians in the band: the electric bassist, the drummer, a keyboardist if the band has one and the vocalist or singer.
The better the band, the stronger the song selection. There are standbys, such as the Beatles’ “Help,” to much more complex pieces like that group’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Checking YouTube quickly reveals that there is a wide range of proficiency among these brand new student rock bands.
The benefits extend beyond aspiring guitar players, as well. Youngsters who have seen their progress plateau during drum lessons will find their skills behind the drum set dramatically improved by playing with other musicians.
Playing rock music alongside friends is a powerful way for youths to blow off steam and do something they love. Music teaches skills and allows for creative expression, but there is only so much traditional lessons can do. Rock band classes exist to teach and inspire young musicians who are ready to move beyond their guitar lessons.
